Our History

Hailing from Mumbai, India, the Sista family moved to the Bay Area in 1978. Although we are from Mumbai our ancestry can be traced to the River Godavari before it reaches the Bay of Bengal. Our forefathers and parents were from the East Godavari district in the state of Andhra. Godavari is one of the sacred rivers of India and flows from the Western Ghats in the State of Maharashtra to the Bay of Bengal on the East Coast of India. The banks of the Godavari provide some of the most beautiful and flowing beauty, rich in history and mythical lore.

In 1982, Subhadra joined us and brought with her rich entrepreneurial experiences from India and Britain and a mind filled with recipes that she had learned from our mother and grandmother. Sue and I started our first restaurant in the South Bay in Sunnyvale as “Sue’s Kitchen”. Sue worked assiduously, mixing her own spice combinations for each menu offering. Sue sold the original restaurant in 1990 and started Sue’s Indian Cuisine in Mountain View.

We are pleased to acknowledge that year after year Sue’s Indian Cuisine in Mountain View has been awarded “The Best Indian Restaurant in Mountain View”, and is considered one of the best in the Bay Area. Sue is no longer with us although we believe she still watches over our daily activities from ethereal grounds. Hence the name change to Godavari to truly represent the origins of the delectable cuisine you find in our restaurant. Over the last four years, you may have noticed that we have added several new dishes, and improved some of the recipes on previous menu items.

Our chefs remain faithful to the traditional recipes and high quality that are the hallmarks of our restaurant. They ensure that every meal is an experience to remember. This arduous training continues in Godavari.

Godavari is a restaurant you can visit over and over again, and experience joy in every dining experience. Our restaurant is blessed with appreciative and satisfied customers from far and wide. We, the Sista family are grateful to you for making our venture a great success as we share with you the delectable Indian cuisine perfected by our sister over 25 years ago.
